To identify the profile of patients who seek care in the Emergency Unit of a Public Dental Service of the city of Ibiúna, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Forty-three records of patients with dental emergencies were examined retrospectively for gender, age, reason for seeking care, type of professional that attended them, and the treatment provided. The mean age was 23 years, mostly male patients (85.1%). The most frequent reasons for seeking care were dental pain (51.8%), followed by traumatic injuries (25.6%) and swelling (8.5%). Dental trauma (25.6%) was the main reason for seeking care in this unit, and the diagnosis was usually related to an odontogenic origin (86.4%). Maxillary and mandibular regions were the most affected. Discomfort was the most frequent reason for seeking care in the emergency unit.
